CLASS XII AISSCE RESULT ANALYSIS

The future is a rainbow of beautiful tomorrows when you hold a dream in your heart!

Congratulations to all our Outstanding Achievers! Hats off to each of you!
During the months of March and April the R.N.Podar School campus was in the grip of examination fever; with senior secondary and secondary students answering their term end exams. Primary section students too were busy preparing themselves for assessments. We can proudly claim that our teachers have embraced the new system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) with full gusto. Our computer generated Report Cards also reflect the new system of grading.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME – CLASS X PARENTS

From time to time the school has been conducting various orientation programmes to educate parents about ongoing changes in the system of assessment/evaluation as proposed by the CBSE Board. Parents of Class X students were invited to one such session on March 13, 2010 wherein doubts regarding CCE were addressed with a great degree of clarity. This proved especially important as the new batch of Class X had begun Classes from 8th March 2010 and they would be the first batch that would not be answering Board exams at the end of their academic year.

EDUCATION REFORMS-PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
By Mrs Avnita Bir (Principal R.N.Podar School)

Replacement of marks with Grading System in Std. 10...implications for parents and students.

“Among the many sweeping changes in the education system are some which appear to be thought up in haste and without rationale.
It is true that as a society we are trying to revamp and reform our tradition-bound education system. This is commendable. However throwing out all age-old practices without weighing their worth is like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

The ideology of 'education for all' is a noble thought, given that we have such a huge 'young India ' that needs to be educated for it to become a 'demographic dividend'. The idea that other countries like China will soon overtake us as the largest English-speaking country outside England disturbs our sleep. That education should address the issue of dropouts is also not being contested. Even USA is obsessive about its No Child Left Behind policy. What is not palatable to educationists is the piecemeal treatment that we are giving to important issues.

While the idea of not failing children up to Class VIII may appear utopian, it does not address the issue of stress-free education completely. The idea of promoting all children to the next higher class has to be supplemented with appropriate mechanisms to ensure that the gaps in learning are covered and that every child has grasped the concepts taught in that class completely.

The readiness to move to the next higher class is a necessary pre-condition before pushing children up. Unless we make the transition smooth and gradual, the child is bound to face a road block at some stage of his education. We cannot brush the reality under the carpet and not deal with it head on. That would simply postpone the outcome which might raise its ugly head to haunt us later.

It has been observed by many schools that even parents become more responsible and conscious about their children's progress when they have to face the reality. In the absence of checks and balances, even adults tend to become lax.

The CBSE Board, which has embarked on life-changing education reforms in the recent past, has introduced the new system of Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation which could be just the answer to educationists' dilemma. The CCE which focuses mainly on Formative Assessments that are diagnostic and remedial in nature would ensure that more children get accepted and not rejected by the evaluation system.

The ongoing assessments that use multiple techniques of gauging the learning of a child would throw up important feedback for the teacher and suitable corrective action could be put in place immediately rather than at the end of the term. This system would set the foundation for a no-dropout-due-to-failure kind of scenario and a win-win for all stakeholders.”

NEW ACADEMIC SESSION – CLASS OF XII

March 15, 2010 heralded the beginning of a new academic session for Class XII students. Year 2010-2011 would be marked by serious preparations for the Board exams along with some exciting moments provided in the form of festivities during the closing session of LIFE SKILLS ACTIVITIES held exclusively for the benefit of grade XI students.

LIFE’S LESSONS LEARNT THROUGH LIFE SKILLS

Click on image to enlarge itLife is what you make of it. As educators we consider it our responsibility to guide students to navigate the choppy waters of life so that they learn to make the most of life’s blessings and in the process make a difference to society.

The period from 12th April to 1st May was an immensely fulfilling one for Senior Secondary boys and girls, during which they participated in a plethora of activities ranging from the exceedingly popular Indian Premier League (IPL) Quiz Contest, cookery session, sports quiz, Junior Achievers Business Sessions and a host of interactive programmes dealing with the finer aspects of grooming, etiquette and personality development which was conducted by experts from the International Finishing Academy. Click on image to enlarge it School Vice Principal Ms. Sunita George took an engaging session on decision making. Writing a good Statement-Of-Purpose is an art that requires a degree of perfection. This skill was engendered by the school career counsellors in one of the sessions.

Ad making, brand equity, talent show, group work, skit presentation, graffiti, product designing, tattoo art, creative expression etc. proved to be a mini fest of sorts on the final day which was open to Class XII participants. Certificates of merit were awarded to the contest winners.

ACTIVITIES GALORE – A FUN LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Click on image to enlarge itNot to be outdone, tenth standard students had an enjoyable time creating websites, designing colourful pots, in addition to learning the art of stress management through meditation and Tibetan Yoga from Ms. Razia Patel.

Click on image to enlarge it‘The desire to help is of little value unless it is accompanied by informed and keen action or first aid.’ This was the aim of First Aid training imparted to the youngsters by Dr. Deepak Dalvi. Students were taught basics such as handling minor cuts, scrapes and even burns. They were told about emergency action to be taken in case of serious situations e.g. a heart attack. At the end of it all a questionnaire was provided to assess learning that had occurred.

YOUREKA!-AN OUTBOUND EXPERIENCE

Click on image to enlarge it‘Conquer your fears and have the time of your life’; these words were held true in every respect when Grade XI students embarked on a fun learning experience in an adventure camp organised by iDiscoveri-an organisation that has for over a decade been giving young people the experience of adventure education programmes. The days between April 5th and 9th proved to be a unique learning experience in the lap of nature with special focus on developing confidence, building character and personality through teamwork and self discipline. Activities such as rock climbing, rappelling, river rafting that were conducted in the picturesque surroundings of Lonavala gave the youth a taste of the outdoors, especially when boys made tents their sleeping abode and girls giggled inside dormitories.

MEDIA STUDIES – A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES

Taking cue from the latest entrant into the gamut of courses offered by CBSE, we at R.N.Podar School are proud of having introduced a new course at the plus two level- ‘Media Studies’ which has been offered as an alternative stream in the new academic session (2010-11) for CLASS XI specifically. The rationale behind the course has been stated as follows:

“Communication is universal to all human beings and is central to our lives. In fact it regulates and shapes all human behaviour. Therefore it is important to have clear understanding of the concept of communication first and then gradually students will be introduced to the concepts of mass communication and mass media .This course looks at the basic nature and characteristics of communication, types of communication, process of communication, and introduction to the various forms of media. The course will also deal with the various roles mass media play in the society.”

We are hopeful that these winds of change are successful in exposing students to a whole world of options and opportunities in terms of career choices. In turn our students will be able to help redefine the creative space in the coming decade.
