INTERSCHOOL – CHESS CARNIVAL

Following students participated in the CHESS CARNIVAL – ICSE Interschool Tournament, conducted by Beacon High School and Bombay Chess Association on 6 and 7 July, 2009.

A VICTORY WELL WON !

Our first inter-school competition win came in the form of the overall championship trophy at horlicks wiz kids 2009 held on the 14 and 15 of July.

On day one, a huge contingent ranging from standard one to twelve represented our school at a lot of events in the fields of music, arts, dance, writing and other fun games and quizzes.  But nature had other plans.  On account of many rains and excessive flooding outside the venue, we were asked to evaculate and the remaining events were postponed to the next day.

Since they do say, “the show must go on”, we did attend the second day despite of downpour.  But school spirit was at its prime and everyone made an effort to be there for the events.  We had an amazing time through all the cheering and competition and returned with the winner’s trophy.

We won laurels in all fields.  We aced the quiz, the antakshari and the writing and art events and grabbed second and third spots in most other events.  Overall it was a wonderful experience and for rich we truly thank our school management and cheers.

‘Dream To Have It All’ was the slogan of the event and it was the zest which each student participated, and ultimately achieved.  Though we were short of students in certain events, our dream to get the trophy back in school helped us sweep the show.  We hope we can recreate this experience in the next year as we go back as defending champions.

The “Tata Building India – School Essay Competition is one of the key initiatives undertaken by the Tata group of companies to motivate the youth of India towards thinking about nation – building.  Instituted in 2006, the competition has grown to become India’s largest essay –writing competition.

In the year 2009, from the ISC section, I was the intra-school winner followed by the runner-up, Ms. Sampoorna Nandi. By virtue of being the school winner I qualified for the city level and stood second all over Mumbai.  The topic allotted to all the children was : ‘What would you do to make India, a happy country?’.  The on-the-spot essays are written only once and judged at the school, city and national levels by an eminent panel of judges, including amongst others – the head of the department (English), Bombay University and principals of reputed ISC Schools.

The prize distribution ceremony was an elaborate affair- held at the Indian Education Society in Bandra Reclamation, Mumbai, with the school winners bagging coffee mugs and travel bags, while the city winners won handycams and digital cameras.  The show lasted for about 2 hours, presided over by the Chief Guest, himself a luminary in the field of educational research.

It was a rewarding evening for Lilavatibai Podar Senior Secondary School, as we bagged the second position amongst stiff competition from students of reputed schools of Mumbai.
